PictureJeong Lee
Hello Maya community! I am pleased to join the staff of practitioners here at Maya Whole Health and to provide a unique therapy that perfectly complements the wide range of holistic health options already offered at Maya.

I am a graduate of Renton Technical College Massage Therapy Practitioner Program and I've been a massage practitioner since 2010, specializing in Bowen Therapy. Bowen Therapy is a gentle effective and therapeutic technique that reactivates innate self-healing mechanisms in the body. This technique is extremely effective on acute injuries, and utilizes specific soft tissue or fascial release and integration techniques.

Bowen Therapy stimulates specific receptors that enable the body itself to correct dysfunctions and restore homeostasis (balance) on a holistic level. Through treating the cause rather than the symptoms, Bowen Therapy has consistently shown it can have profound and permanent healing and pain relief outcomes. Bowen Therapy treats the whole body with holistic effects are apparent in patients who find resolution to problems above and beyond those for which they have sought treatment, for example lack of energy, stress or emotional issues. This technique and my approach are perfect for the individual looking for a more energetic, integrated, and holistic approach.

Read more below on the benefits of this therapy, then schedule an appointment to see for yourself.

What is Neuromuscular Therapy and Bowen Technique?

This comprehensive program of soft-tissue manipulation balances the body’s central nervous system with the musculoskeletal system. Based on neurological laws that explain how the central nervous system initiates and maintains pain, the goal is to help relieve the pain and dysfunction by understanding and alleviating the underlying cause. Neuromuscular therapy can help individuals who experience distortion and biomechanical dysfunction, which is often a symptom of a deeper problem. It is also used to locate and release spasms and hypercontraction in the tissue, eliminate trigger points that cause referred pain, rebuild the strength of injured tissues, assist venous and lymphatic flow, and
restore postural alignment, proper biomechanics, and flexibility to the tissues.

Bowen Technique

Bowen Technique is a neuromuscular technique for treating muscular and neurological pain. Gentle stimulation of active trigger points releases muscle tension allowing the body to relax. This also activates the body’s natural healing ability. Short rest periods between moves allow the body to integrate healing.

Is Bowen Therapy covered by health insurance, PIP, or L&I?

Yes, most insurance plans do provide coverage for Bowen Therapy under a health services umbrella called ‘massage services’.

What age is safe to use Bowen Therapy?
Bowen Therapy is safe, gentle and effective for people of all ages from newborn babies and pregnant women, to the elderly.

How many Bowen Therapy treatments will I need?
How many Bowen Therapy treatments you need will depends on the severity and length of time of the health issue(s). You may need more treatments if you have long standing and or severe conditions and fewer treatments for more recent and moderate ones.If you are new to Bowen therapy it is best to receive a minimum of 3-5 weekly treatments to
determine if this therapy will be helpful your specific condition.

How long is the treatment session?
Treatments are up to 50 minutes in duration.

Will I need to undress for Bowen Therapy treatment?
Bowen Therapy can be done over clothing, therefore loose, flexible and thin clothing is most appropriate to wear, i.e. t-shirt, shorts, tights and socks.

How will I know if the Bowen is working?
During a Bowen treatment it is common to start feeling more mentally and physically relaxed after about 15-20 minutes into the treatment.  However, since the effects of the treatment usually continue for the next several significant changes may not be felt until several days later or several treatments depending how strongly the body responds to each treatment.

What instructions do I need to follow after a Bowen treatment?
For maximum benefits:
  •  Avoid strenuous activities for several days
  •  Drink plenty of water
  •  Walk 10-30 minutes daily
  •  Avoid ice or heat

Will Bowen Therapy solve my health problem?
Bowen Therapy can be effective for most muscle-skeletal conditions most of the time. Many people do report significant improvement or relief of symptoms. If you are not sure if Bowen may be helpful for you, please contact the clinic to consult with the Bowen practitioner.

How much does a Bowen treatment cost?
One session is $85 if paying by cash, however if you have health insurance it may be covered under your health insurance, PIP, or L&I.

Hello Valued Maya Whole Health Community,

For those of you who do not yet know me, I am proud to be the Program Manager for Maya Whole Health. One of my favorite things to do is to learn. I fell in love with yoga 15 years ago and find the constant learning that occurs in my practice inspiring and motivating. My hope is that, through the programs we offer here at Maya you will also have this opportunity to light your own way in life and get inspired to live well and be kind to yourself.
I probably love my job most because I get to take the workshops that we offer and continue to learn every day at Maya. In order to keep bringing you workshops and classes you'll grow in, I need to ask questions:
What inspires you?
What would be the most useful practices for you?
What gives you peace in mind, body and spirit?
What do you want through your yoga practice?
What do you need to grow and create who you want to become?

Maya Whole Health is in this to support the wellness and growth of our community and I am always listening for your ideas and finding instructors who can answer your questions or help to map your life and health goals. To the best of my ability I aim to bring amazing people whose lives have been altered in some way by a practice that spoke deeply to them and now they teach and inspire others.

The workshops and class series on our schedule give you the opportunity to go further or get started and tune into you. Workshops bring in new voices and experiences and give you insights into yourself that can serve to influence your day to day practice, and your day to day life. From understanding Shamanic practices, learning how to let go in Trance Dance, or discovering the basic of yoga in Yoga Essentials,  I strive to bring diversity and substance.

The series classes give you a chance to start something, see it through to the end, and witness your own growth. They give you the chance to add a new class time to your carefully budgeted routine and commit for shorter periods, building whatever it is you choose to build. In these short term classes, you may try on Pilates Equipment for size, or get moving again in Re-Entry to Fitness. Whatever your goals, a class series may be the ideal kick-start you need. Some classes are such a big hit, we put them on the regular schedule!

I hope that you will make the time to try one of the workshops or series offered here at Maya. Bring a friend and it becomes even easier to keep the goals you set and take the risks that will help you grow. Be sure to register early, this ensures minimum attendance requirements are met so workshops and series classes continue to populate the schedule and return again and again.

Our full schedule of workshops and class series can be found on our website. Stay tuned to this blog to learn more about upcoming workshops and classes as well as meet the wide array of teachers that guide your path and unlock your potential.

See an upcoming workshop you'd like to spread the word about?
Here are a few ways you can assist Maya in maintaining strong workshop offerings:

Lessons Within Stillness:: Connecting with Diana Reed

Ever notice how driving a car over the same patch of grass leaves a track? When I continue to drive over the same spot time and again, the track gets more pronounced, deeper, perhaps even destroying the grass beneath it. My brain, as another soft and spongy texture, works much the same way. When I teach myself how to react in a certain manner, conjure the same emotions, and live the same life, I create those tracks. I teach myself every single day how to react, how to be treated, and how to move forward.

So how do I fill in the tracks on my mind's lawn? I stop driving over them again and again so new growth can happen, life can return, and traces of the past disappear.

How can meditation heal your mind from old habits and repetitions? Keep reading.

Picture
  • Recognize the presence of fear and worry. Quite often, I hear that nagging voice that talks to me about the future, spinning tales of failure and defeat. I listen to this voice, playing the game of “what if” for longer than I ever intended. I might even find myself immersed in the scenarios my mind creates, keeping me from experiencing the moments I am in where true reality exists. Sitting in quiet silence keeps me focused on here and now, instead of when and maybe.

  • Negate the effects of fear and worry. Emotions can wreak havoc on bodies over time. Turning on the stress response over and over not only puts it into overtime, it breeds chronic stress that taxes the body so completely the adrenal glands may fail. 70% of the immune system lives in the digestive tract and chronic stress compromises our defenses beyond measure. I know that knot in my stomach? And I know it's trying to tell me something.

  • Choose the counter of fear and worry. Meditation practice provides tools to combat the effects of stress. There is much to be said for the power of being present to cultivate an environment of healing that begins with and in my mind and resonates throughout my entire body. Making conscious choices to think differently takes time and perseverance, but I, and you, are all teachable.

  • Let go of fear and worry. As I progress within meditation, I begin to connect to another voice within, one that guides me unconditionally. The voice that reminds me that I am ok right now, and that no matter what is placed in my path, I can find a way through. Winston Churchill once said “If you’re going through hell, keep going.”

  • Move into love and trust. When I connect to my internal guidance system, my intuition, my knowing, over and over again, I begin to fill in the trenches  created in my mind that compel me into the same reasoning. Just like breaking a habit, or learning a language, my mind has the innate ability to un-learn and re-learn. I teach my mind every single day to stay present, connect to my higher self, and move forward with love and trust.

Beginning Sunday February 7, join fellow meditators every week at 4:00 pm for a  group meditation class.
Unlock your potential.

Going upside down: Connecting with Tiffany Berry

We are working our way to a safe and confident handstand in my Saturday morning vinyasa class.  As handstand hasn't been a part of my practice since before my pregnancy, I have a lot of preparing and practicing for the pose to do myself.  This means a renewed commitment to a daily asana practice which took second stage to a mindfulness and self-awareness practice that helps me survive the rigors of parenting.

Daily, home asana practice has always been hard for me.  I want my space to look like the spreads in the magazine.  Clean, bright, tranquil, color-coordinated.  Did I mention clean?  So there's usually a "oh, let me just tidy up before my practice", which inevitably causes a piece of paper to cross my path which leads to a "oh, let me get this email out before my practice", which, these days, inevitably is interrupted with a "oh, baby's awake!".

Picture
It's hard to put these things out of mind.  Or at least ignore them enough to get on my mat.  If there's even room for my mat.

But that's part of our practice.  That very work of letting that which isn't important at the present moment, even if it's important at another time.

And a practice it is.

The yoga sutras remind us that we can only make progress with repeated, applied effort.  So we repeat, every day, getting on the mat, prioritizing decluttering our mind over decluttering our floor (after checking that it's baby-safe!).

Handstand won't be achievable without practice. peaceful self-awareness wont be either. So choose to practice. In the middle of the clutter.

Join me Saturday mornings at 9:00 am and flip your world upside down.

Shape Shifting Energy :: Connecting with Lynn Brown

1/14/2016

Picture
“We manifest our reality, which is from a place of unlimited resources. There is not a limit of abundance in the universe. There is a limit on the understanding of the power of our minds and our energy blueprint".-Lynn Brown

I am an intuitive, energy healer and medium with a versatile background in finance, athletics and leadership. As the owner of Intoit Apparel and RaaNess of Life, LLC, I work with individuals, teams, and groups to enhance lives, heal ailments, and increase their overall ability to manifest the life they desire.  I host “Get Intoit- Winning at the Game of Life,” a radio show that focuses on bringing the magic of soul into various aspects of your day to day life. My management and coaching background enable me to teach spirit tools in an understandable way that you can immediately use; helping you remember how to connect with yourself as a spiritual being with natural spiritual abilities.

Born and raised in the small western town of Winthrop, WA, in the heart of the Cascade Mountains, I grew up playing in the dirt, hunting, fishing, and playing every sport I could. In grade school, I planned to be a professional quarterback for the Seattle Seahawks, but basketball ultimately caught my heart. From Jr. High through College, I travelled the United States and the World playing basketball, sometimes living out of a suitcase for weeks at a time. From a young age, I've brought these unique experiences to my community; coaching, mentoring, and educating young people on the importance of leadership, teamwork, and confidence. Whether playing Division I basketball in college or as a coach and mentor to other collegiate athletes and local youth, I help sculpt the lives of others and guide them forward on their pathway to success. I realize that only a small percentage of people can be influenced through basketball, but that everyone has a personal legacy that they are actively living into. I use my unique background in finance, athletics, leadership and intuitive training as a rare skillset with which I can help you live into your full potential.

If we are to become prosperity, we must learn to be the vibration of prosperity. Just as we match and learn from ascended masters, so too can we do this with the vibration, and as I like to call it, "consciousness" of ANY thing.
Let us learn to match the vibration and consciousness of gold, silver, platinum and then money itself in order to invite in and allow more of ALL the richness on the planet.

In my upcoming Maya workshop, you will begin to understand how to shape shift your energy. Allowing you to "become" that thing that you are trying to become. This is not viewing something as over "there" and you are "here". It is literally merging with the energy and inserting yourself into the consciousness of that thing. It essentially allows you to view existence from the perspective of "that thing" just as you view your life through your eyes. It allows you to "feel" its experiences just as you feel your experiences. It allows you to "know" that thing and its relationship with all things just as you know yourself and your relationship with all things.

“You are not your mind or your body. Both must be mastered to serve your higher consciousness, or spirit.” ~Yogi Bhajan

I find Kundalini Yoga comprehensive and practical in its instruction and depth. It is my goal to make this profound Yogic technology accessible to you and all fellow seekers.

Kundalini yoga combines contemporary and ancient practices of movement,
breath, meditation, and mantra. My goal is to deliver you to your most sensitive, natural, unique, and discerning self by the aid of this time tested tradition. Closely guarded and only taught from master to disciple throughout the ages it is now available to everyone.

By divine guidance Yogi Bhajan brought these teachings along with a vast library of wisdom to the West in 1969 which was then taught openly to the public for the very first time in this tradition. Open yourself to go beyond the familiar and harness the Kundalini energy in this powerful modality on
your evolutionary journey.

What can you expect in a Kundalini class?

Picture
"Tuning in"Mantras

Ong Namo Guru Dev Namo
Before practicing a yoga set or meditation I always begin by Tuning in. This Mantra the “Adi Mantra” is said to light the candle of consciousness and will ready your mind to expand unto Infinity.

“Ong” is the infinite creative
energy in manifestation and consciousness.

“Namo” means I bow in reverence to my higher Self.

“Guru Dev” relates to the divine teacher within.

*Mantra translates to “Mind” (man) “Wave” (tra) or wavelength of the mind

Now we practice kriyas

Kriya means completed action, action of the soul, and action of breath. Kundalini Yoga utilizes many different

Kriya’s which are specific sequences of physical movements designed to perform a specific energetic shift, cleansing, and realignment of the physical and energetic body.

Picture
Enter Shavasana
Shavasana also refers to “Corpse pose” where we lay on our back after our workout, eyes closed, palms up, and completely relax the bodies and psyche integrating the subtle changes in our body and energetic field.

A study of action within stillness.

Picture
Meditation and closing
A short meditation or set of meditations will be given.

“May the Long Time Sun” brings closure to every Kundalini class. Sing from the Heart.

I’ve become very interested in a yoga practice that is about staying in the middle, staying in the transition. It’s about Tara Brach’s suggestion, “Awaken recognition simply by asking yourself: “What is happening inside me right now?”

When we are in the yoga studio, we have the opportunity to practice investigation of “What is happening inside me right now”. This is in the transition from pose to pose, breath to breath.

Picture
This is in the staying with the flexion of the toes, even as you draw your knee forward from Down Dog to Lunge, or more challenging, as you lay on the fitness ball and roll back and forth.

Can you practice keeping your attention on “What is happening inside me right now?” as you press your lifted leg into your partner’s or teacher's hands, pressing up to a Half Pike?. Can you move closer to the emotions, the sensations in this transition, come to know them? Can you practice making friends with them, saying “I agree, I agree” or “Yes”, “This, too”, I consent”. (from the teachings of Tara Brach and Pema Chodron.)

Join me Saturday  January 31 from 1:00-3:00 pm for my Elements of Alignment workshop. This is your time to stop everything and ask that question about that pose.

Bring your favorite pose, the one you love, the one you could do every class, the one you show off to your friends.

AND...Bring the pose you want to get into, the pose you wish was different for you.

See you there!

Get Out of your Head and Into Your Heart:: Connecting with Alec Davis

1/9/2016

Picture
"The heart is not like a box that gets filled up; it expands in size the more you love. I'm different from you. This doesn't make me love you any less. It actually makes me love you more." Samantha from the movie Her.

Most people who attend have never done Trance Dance before, but It is very simple to learn; Trance Dance is the opportunity to connect more clearly with your heart.

Trance Dance is a unique blend of body movement, healing sounds, dynamic percussive rhythms, transformational breathing techniques and the innovative use of a blindfold or bandana – together stimulating a trance state that promotes spiritual awakening, mental clarity, physical stamina and emotional well-being. Driven by unique musical soundtracks recorded specifically for this method of healing, Trance Dance takes participants on an inner journey not limited to our normal perceptions of space/time.

Picture
Ritual trance journeys have been a vital part of shamanic and eastern dance cultures for thousands of years. My contemporary approach to Trance Dance brings together the richness of these ancient rituals with some startlingly effective modern techniques.  All of us spend a great deal of time in our rational mind. This is the chance to really listen to our heart versus our head.

Trance Dance's primary focus is on healing and spiritual evolution. By dancing within the seclusion of darkness participants discover parallel realities where solutions to seemingly unsolvable problems are possible. Through Trance Dance we `disappear', becoming more like spirit, and simultaneously less attached to life's ordinary difficulties, making it possible at these moments to let these problems go.  Wilbert Alix, creator of the Trance Dance experience, explains the benefits of Trance Dance to the human soul in the video below:

Pre-registration is strongly recommended.

Note: This series may be cancelled 48 hours before it is scheduled to begin if minimum registration is not met.

108 Salutations to the Sun

PictureMe on a Florida beach near sunset
It's the time of year now, when the days are quite short and the air heavy.  Instructor and Studio Coordinator Diana Reed shares her insights on the season::

Although I grew up in Chicago, living in Florida for 30 years sort of halted the seasonal changes most other parts of the world experience. Fall meant the temperature dropped to 80 and in winter we might get a freeze or two, but 75 is the average, and the Gulf of Mexico is still warm and inviting. Hence the tourists.

PictureSunset on San Juan Island
Since moving to Washington, the change of season has been felt for sure! It's a wonderful reminder of my Chicago days, and a reminder of just what it means to move from summer to fall to winter. The shorter days remind me to slow down, take stock, and rest a little more. A hibernation, if you will, to prepare for the coming of the sun.

On December 22, we enter Winter Solstice, when the days start to get longer and the light returns. In celebration of this shift, the practice of 108 sun salutations allows us to usher in the changing light and ignite the fires on which we've lowered the flames. We will practice one salutation (see the video below for a demo if you're not familiar with Surya Namaskar A) in sets of 20 with a 5 minute rest in between. The practice will leave you invigorated and stretched, opening pathways for the light to enter.

After all, the sun shines everywhere, from coast to coast, border to border, heart to heart.

I hope you'll join me in this amazing class!

Malia gets the donation basket ready!

After growing up in Maple Valley, my family and I spent most of 2015 living and working in Oaxaca, Mexico. Now that I've returned to the Pacific Northwest, I'm happy to have found Maya Whole Health Studio and the opportunity to join the Maya Team as Outreach Coordinator where I can grow my passion for holistic health and altruistic work. Because of my background working with non-profit organizations, I'm eager to help Maya partner with local non-profits and engage the Renton community. Next year I'm hoping to revisit past partnerships and create new ones with local grassroots non-profits (I would love and appreciate any suggestions you have that are near and dear to your heart).

My husband Mark and I have two children; our son Rory who is 3 years old and our daughter Jinora who is just 1 year old. I try my hardest to eat raw vegan and sometimes fails miserably, typically when bacon is involved. I love doing acro yoga with my husband and kids and I'm also an instructor, so be sure to look for my name on the class schedule too!

You'll find me at the front desk most mornings, be sure to say hello and share any suggestions for a future Community Benefit Partner.
